The higher education institutions located in the Cité offer a large pool of specialized labor for the companies that set up there. No fewer than 500 students graduate annually from technical and university programs related to agri-food.

In particular, its two major college-level educational institutions, Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe and Institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec (ITAQ), offer several technical programs in the sector, including Food Processing and Quality Technology, Dairy Processing Techniques, Dietetics Techniques, Animal Health Techniques, and Laboratory and Biotechnology Techniques.

For its part, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Université de Montréal, the only French-language veterinary teaching unit in the Americas, trains future veterinarians at the graduate level, but also offers programs related to public health and food safety.

The only French-speaking veterinary faculty in the Americas, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Université de Montréal, established in Saint-Hyacinthe for over 70 years, enjoys an international reputation. It is distinguished by its cutting-edge expertise in animal reproduction, swine and poultry herd health, equine and bovine medicine, and food safety and security.

With 21 research units, the Faculty is a strategic partner for companies in the agri-food and veterinary sectors, actively contributing to innovation, technology transfer, and the development of solutions applicable to industry. It also trains more than 400 future veterinarians, ensuring a highly qualified workforce for a competitive and growing industry.

Food Technology Institute (ITAQ)

The Institut de technologie agroalimentaire du Québec (ITAQ) is a key player in training and innovation in the agri-food sector, particularly in food processing technologies. Through its six specialized college programs leading to DEC and DTA degrees, it trains nearly 70% of the technical workforce in Quebec’s agri-food sector.

Renowned for the expertise of its faculty, ITAQ also supports businesses by offering continuing education programs that reach nearly 4,000 professionals each year. It also has the largest horticultural facilities dedicated to college education in Canada, providing a unique environment for experimentation, knowledge transfer, and skills development.

Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe is a major player in training and innovation for businesses, with more than 5,000 students and 26 technical and pre-university programs, several of which are directly related to the agri-food and biotechnology sectors.

Its programs in animal health, dietetics, and biotechnology have been actively contributing to the development of businesses in the technology park for several years. Unique in the greater Montreal area, the biotechnology program with work-study internships facilitates the rapid integration of qualified talent into companies. The Cégep also operates two college technology transfer centers (CCTT)Cintech agroalimentaire and Groupe CTT—which support businesses in their innovation, optimization, and technology transfer projects.

Several centres established within the Cité de l’innovation agroalimentaire are among the national leaders in research and technology transfer. These include the Saint-Hyacinthe Research and Development Centre (CRD), Canada’s largest center dedicated to processed foods, and Cintech Agroalimentaire, recognized for its support of businesses, from innovation to commercialization, and for its specialized infrastructure, including the Humami Centre.

The Cité also hosts leading sectoral centers of expertise—ACER, the Centre d’expertise fromagère du Québec, and Biopterre—which support innovation and business development in their respective fields.

Canada’s Largest Food Research Centre

The Saint-Hyacinthe Research and Development Center (CRD) is Canada’s largest research and development center dedicated to processed foods and is part of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada network. It supports the agri-food industry in developing innovative solutions for food preservation, quality, and safe processing, by promoting process optimization and the marketing of high-performance products.

The CRD also stands out for its work on value-added ingredients that contribute to the health and nutritional performance of foods. Its expertise covers a wide range of sectors, including dairy and cereal products, meat, and fruit and vegetables, making the CRD a leading partner for food innovation.

This college-based technology transfer centre (CCTT) supports agri-food companies at every stage of innovation, from product design to marketing. Supported by a team of researchers, specialized laboratories, and state-of-the-art equipment, he carries out numerous industrial mandates in research and development, food safety, by-product recovery, and sensory marketing.

Due to the scope of its activities and the diversity of its clientele, this centre has established itself as one of the major players in food innovation in Quebec.

ADM Animal Nutrition (Canadian division) manufactures nutritional premixes for livestock, poultry, and pets. It also distributes ingredients, feed additives, medications, and other animal health products.

Aerovirus Technologies Inc. is an SMB specializing in real-time detection and neutralization technologies for aeroviral and aerobacterial threats, leading to healthier animals and zero or minimal use of antibiotics.

BCI Foods is Canada’s largest soup manufacturer. In addition to its famous Aylmer brand, the company produces a wide range of soups under its two other popular brands, Primo and Baxters, as well as a large number of private labels. Its facilities enable it to produce condensed and ready-to-serve soups, broths, sauces, pasta, and ready-to-eat pouch meals. It operates according to the highest safety standards in the industry, namely the BRC standard for food quality.

Barry Callebaut Canada is the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality cocoa and chocolate products. The company operates in 26 countries and has around 40 production sites. It serves the entire food industry, from manufacturers to professional users of chocolate, such as chocolatiers, confectioners, and pastry chefs, as well as retailers.

Biena Inc. is a leading producer and distributor of bacterial cultures. It specializes in the research and production of enzymes, ferments, and probiotics for pharmacies and the dairy and cheese industries for the global market. Its technologies are also applied in the deli meat and animal feed sectors.

Bio Biscuit is a leading manufacturer of pet food, dedicated to offering the highest quality baked products. Based in Saint-Hyacinthe, this family-owned business serves local and international markets with its Oven-Baked Tradition brand, known and loved by its customers for its commitment to authenticity, health, and animal welfare. As a family business, it values tradition and excellence passed down from generation to generation.

Biovet, a division of Antech Diagnostics, a subsidiary of Mars Petcare, operates a CFIA-certified laboratory offering a full range of innovative diagnostic services for veterinarians. More than just a benchmark in veterinary diagnostics, its laboratory is accredited by the SCC and MELCC for microbiological analysis of food, drinking water, and non-potable water. In addition, Biovet is the only Canadian company to develop, manufacture, and market a range of high-performance multiplex serology products, ELISA diagnostic kits, and qPCR kits for animals.

Brasseurs du Monde is a Quebec microbrewery renowned for its wide variety of craft beers inspired by brewing traditions from around the world. It specializes in developing original recipes with distinctive flavor profiles.

CDMV is Canada’s leader in the marketing of products and drugs for veterinary practices. The company is an important pillar of the animal health innovation and production ecosystem in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. By enabling the nationwide marketing of innovative veterinary pharmaceutical products, its operations support the development of numerous manufacturers in this sector. In addition, its contribution to the development of technologies aimed at improving the management of veterinary practices has a significant impact on the protection of animal and public health.

A leader in bovine genetics and reproduction, Ciaq employs more than 200 people across Quebec. Its mission is to support the profitability of dairy and beef producers by distributing world-class bovine genetics products and services tailored to the evolving needs of Quebec producers, as well as farm products that improve the profitability of their herds in the dairy and beef sectors.

DCL Nutrition + Animal Health Inc. is a manufacturer and distributor of high-quality non-medicated animal feed additives, such as enzymes, probiotics, prebiotics, minerals, disinfectants, aromatic compounds, and plant extracts. These products are specially designed for the pork, poultry, and ruminant industries to improve animal health. It exports its products to some 50 countries and is now considered the world leader in organic cranberry processing and the second largest player in organic wild blueberries. Located in the Cité de l’innovation agroalimentaire, its Centre of Excellence in Berry Processing brings together experts in the fields of retail, ingredients, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. Its activities are as varied as new product development, the development and improvement of production processes, and participation in various scientific and innovation projects with research and educational institutions.

General Mills is one of the world’s largest food companies, with a portfolio of more than 100 brands, including many market leaders. Its Saint-Hyacinthe plant employs some 240 people and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It manufactures the Yoplait and Liberté brands, which are among the company’s most popular brands in Canada.

Nutri Group is a Canadian leader in the grading, processing, and marketing of eggs and egg products. Founded in 1987, the Maskoutain-based company employs more than 300 people in a dozen companies and plants across Canada, most of which are jointly owned with regional poultry producers.

Hershey Canada Inc. – Brookside Factory specializes in the manufacture of chocolate-coated products. Over the years, it has developed the best recipes and processes for coating a wide variety of fruits and nuts with premium quality chocolate. It is a subsidiary of the Hershey’s group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chocolate confectionery.

Industrie Gastronomique Cascajares specializes in preparing artisanal-quality culinary solutions, thanks to its extensive expertise in precision sous-vide cooking developed in Spain. In addition to its Chef Brigade range for catering professionals, it creates ready-to-use products, simmered just like at home, for the general public under its own brand, Le Chef et moi, or for other brands.

With 30 years of experience, Atsenti Laboratories aims to bridge the gap between the traditional pharmaceutical industry and manufacturers of natural health products. Atsenti identifies, isolates, and purifies the active molecules in medicinal plants using entirely natural methods. The company focuses its activities on natural antioxidants. Atsenti processes more than 2,500 tons of plant material each year to produce extracts of unparalleled quality.

Les Viandes Lacroix is a family-owned business specializing in meat processing. Its 50,000-square-foot plant is HACCP certified and has also obtained SQF Level 2 certification.

Naturel HPP is Canada’s first and only cold food processing service company that uses high pressure processing (HPP), a process that uses only water to maximize business opportunities for Canadian food processors and ultimately offer consumers food that tastes better and stays fresher longer.

Nutrania Inc. offers premixes of minerals and vitamins for animals, as well as specialty nutritional solutions.

ODF Nutra is a leader in the development and operation of a system for the oral and buccal delivery of active ingredients in the form of rapidly dissolving films: the ODF (Orally Dissolving Film) system. Probiotech International develops and promotes the use of functional plants and fatty acids for animal nutrition, health, and well-being. The company works closely with leading research institutes and universities around the world to create products that improve animal performance and well-being while increasing profits for farmers. The development of innovative solutions in partnership with its customers (feed manufacturers, premix companies, and integrators) in Canada and the United States has greatly contributed to its success over the years.

Station Agro-biotech specializes in the manufacturing and marketing of innovative products in the brewing, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverage industries. It includes Distillerie NOROI and Microbrasserie Le bilboquet. With its state-of-the-art facilities, its team can assist its clients in the design, production, and marketing of their projects.

Sterinova Inc. is a pharmaceutical company specializing in the development and manufacture of sterile, ready-to-use injectable products. Its products, which include pre-filled syringes and intravenous solution bags, are designed to meet the specific needs of healthcare professionals.

VACCI-VET is a company established in 2009 in the Cité de l’Innovation Agroalimentaire. It specializes in the design and manufacture of autogenous veterinary vaccines. Its autogenous vaccines are tailor-made to combat specific diseases affecting livestock.
